Professional  experience

My name is Julie Howes , I am a Fully Accredited Play Therapist and Social worker and a paid member of PTUK/APAC & The Care Council of Wales. I have in excess of 30 years direct experience of working Therapeutically with Looked After and Adopted children supporting parents, foster carers and professionals in the supporting network around the child aswel as providing training on Therapeutic Parenting with PACE and supporting Transitions.

During that time I have worked in a variety of settings: Residential Therapeutic communities, specialist residential homes, Childrens and Adolescents Mental Health Team, NSPCC Sexual Abuse project. Local Authority Child Protection Team, Independent Fostering agencies and Western Bay Adoption Team, before establishing Squiggles Therapeutic services over 10 years ago.

My professional development has been informed by an early grounding in Psychodynamic theory and Practice before undertakingCroydon's Psychoanalytically based CQSW and Diploma in Applied Social Sciences.

The most profound and influential work setting for me was The Caldecott Therapeutic Community in Kent. Its philosophy was based on Psychodynamic principles the ground breaking work on Attachment theory of Winnicot and Bowlby. This experience for me provided the grounding I needed going forward in my professional development and has served to underpin all that I have learnt since.

Our Philosophy

Julie uses an Integrative Holistic model of Play therapy. A wide range of creative arts media are used such as; sand play, puppets, art, story telling and dramatic role play . When the child is engaged in the play the therapist works with the conscious and unconscious processes using non-directive and directive approaches to help progress the process for the child.

Outside of play therapy the therapist delivers services which keeps the needs of the child central to any work that is undertaken with parents carers and the support network around the child.
